Floyd-Steinberg is the best-known error-diffusion dither: each pixel is quantized to the nearest palette level and the rounding error is pushed onto its right and lower neighbors in a 7/16-5/16-3/16-1/16 split. The result keeps photographic gradients remarkably smooth even at brutal color budgets — which is why it became the default in classic image software.

What makes Floyd-Steinberg different from Bayer dithering?
Floyd-Steinberg diffuses quantization error to neighboring pixels, producing organic, noise-like texture that tracks the image. Bayer is an ordered dither — a fixed repeating matrix — which produces a regular crosshatch pattern instead.
Why does my dithered image look smoother than other tools?
